Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

What can spray foam have the highest R-value?

Closed-cell foam has the highest R-value per inch, about R-5 to R-7 according to HomeGuide, compared with roughly R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open-cell. That is why closed-cell is used where space is tight, like a 2x4 wall or a rim joist.

Why do some people call spray foam a red flag?

The concerns trace back to bad installs: foam mixed wrong that smells or shrinks, or foam sprayed over a roof deck that was already leaking, hiding rot. Inspectors and buyers may also want to see the roof deck. We inspect the roof and framing first and document what we spray.

How much does spray foam insulation cost in Dover?

National ranges from HomeGuide run $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed, with minimum charges around $1,000 to $2,000 or more. A rim joist job often lands near $2,000 to $2,500. We quote after seeing the house, and that quote is the price.

Is there a high temperature spray foam?

Standard spray foam is not meant for hot surfaces. Chimneys, flues and recessed lights need clearances and metal or fire-rated materials around them, which we install before insulating near them.

Do you insulate Amish and Mennonite shops and barns?

Yes. We spray closed-cell foam on steel and post-frame buildings across the valley and into Holmes County.

Do I need to leave during spraying?

Yes. HomeGuide recommends staying out at least 24 hours after spray foam is applied. Blown-in insulation does not need that.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several national chemical companies produce two-part spray foam systems, and suppliers carry multiple brands. More important than the brand is that the product is rated for the use and installed at the right temperature and mix, with any required thermal or ignition barrier.

Can closed-cell foam go on a stone foundation?

Usually on the rim and sill above it. Stone walls breathe and can wick water, so we check moisture before foaming the wall itself.

Will foam make my house too tight?

Air sealing can reduce natural air leakage enough that ventilation needs a look. We point out bath fans and combustion appliances that should be checked.

How thick is a typical rim joist application?

Usually 2 to 3 inches of closed-cell, which gives about R-10 to R-20 depending on the product.

Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions

What is the attic insulation code in Ohio?

Ohio's residential energy table lists R-49 for ceilings in Zone 5A, which covers Dover and most of the state.

Does air sealing really matter if I add insulation?

Yes. Air leaks carry heat and moisture through insulation. Sealing first makes the insulation work as rated.

Will this help with icicles and ice dams?

Ice dams form when warm attic air melts roof snow. Sealing the attic floor is the main fix.

How long does an attic job take?

Most are done in a day.

Rim Joist & Basement Insulation Questions

How much does rim joist foam cost?

HomeGuide lists about $2,000 to $2,500 for a typical house. We quote after measuring yours.

Can you insulate a basement that gets damp?

Damp air, yes, with closed-cell foam. Liquid water needs to be fixed first.

Does basement wall foam need drywall over it?

In a finished or occupied basement, most foams need a thermal barrier. We tell you what applies.

Is rim joist foam worth it in a newer house?

Often yes. Even newer homes usually have only loose batts at the rim.

Barn, Shop & Ag Building Insulation Questions

How much foam does a barn roof need to stop dripping?

Often an inch or two of closed-cell is enough for condensation control; heated buildings need more.

Can you foam a building that is in use?

Yes, with planning. We section off areas and work around your schedule.

Does foam help with noise from rain on a steel roof?

Yes. Foam noticeably dampens rain noise.

Is foam on a pole barn safe for livestock?

Once cured, yes, but ventilation must still be planned. We discuss it during the visit.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Does blown-in insulation settle?

Some settling happens, more with cellulose. We install to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.

Is blown-in as good as spray foam?

In an open attic, sealing plus blown-in reaches the same R-value for less. Foam is better for rim joists, damp walls and tight spaces.

Can you blow insulation into walls with plaster?

Yes. We drill from outside or inside and patch.

How deep is R-49?

Roughly 13 to 16 inches depending on the material.

Crawl Space Insulation Questions

Should crawl space vents be closed?

In a sealed and insulated crawl space, yes. Open vents let humid summer air in.

Is a vapor barrier enough on its own?

It helps, but walls and the rim joist still need insulation and sealing.

How low can a crawl space be for you to work?

We work in tight spaces. We confirm access during the visit.

Will this help a musty smell?

Sealing out damp air and covering the ground usually reduces it a lot.
