When Blown-In Beats Foam

Blown-in insulation is loose cellulose or fiberglass delivered through a hose. It fills around joists, wires and pipes, and it can be packed into closed wall cavities through small holes. For a large open attic floor, it is usually the least expensive way to reach the R-49 that Ohio's code lists for Zone 5A ceilings, or the R-60 ENERGY STAR suggests for empty attics.

In attics

After sealing the attic floor, we blow insulation to a measured depth and leave depth markers so you can check it. Baffles at the eaves keep soffit vents clear.

In walls

Many pre-1940 homes in Dover and the canal towns have walls with nothing in them. We drill small holes, usually from outside under the siding, and dense-pack cellulose into each bay. Dense-packed cellulose slows air movement as well as heat. Holes are plugged and siding replaced.

Cellulose or fiberglass

Cellulose is made largely from recycled paper treated for fire resistance; it packs densely and resists air movement in walls. Blown fiberglass is lighter and does not settle as much in attics. Fixr's figures put fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80 per square foot; we recommend one or the other based on the space.

Before blowing walls

We check for live knob-and-tube wiring, which should not be buried, and for moisture problems in siding or gutters.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Does blown-in insulation settle?

Some settling happens, more with cellulose. We install to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.

Is blown-in as good as spray foam?

In an open attic, sealing plus blown-in reaches the same R-value for less. Foam is better for rim joists, damp walls and tight spaces.

Can you blow insulation into walls with plaster?

Yes. We drill from outside or inside and patch.

How deep is R-49?

Roughly 13 to 16 inches depending on the material.
